A group of Take Back Power supporters have today been hoisting reimagined national flags in the constituency of Clacton carrying the message: Tax the rich. Take Back Power is a nonviolent civil-resistance group, demanding that the UK government establish a ‘House of the People’- a permanent citizen-led assembly with the power to tax extreme wealth. [1]
This afternoon, a group of seven Take Back Power supporters took to the streets of Frinton-on-Sea, part-time home to Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader and Clacton MP and began hoisting the pink and yellow flags on lamp posts in the town centre, while removing England flags and Union Jacks.
Taking action today was Wilf, 24, a student who said:
“I’m from a seaside town just like Clacton, and I understand why people are angry. For decades now we’ve been abandoned by politicians like Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage who’d rather line the pockets of their billionaire buddies than help people put food on their tables. The same politicians are desperate to shift the blame. But I also know that the people in these towns are welcoming, hard-working, and have enough common sense to see through the bullshit and recognise that the problem is the people in mega-yachts, not the small boats. That’s why we’re here today, to call for a wealth tax and put ordinary people first through a House of the People.”
A spokesperson for Take Back Power said:
“We are proud of many things about our country – our diverse communities, our democracy, our NHS – which is precisely why we don’t like our flags being misrepresented by organised hate groups. We believe that our flags belong to all of us. That’s why we are reclaiming the flag as a symbol of community and welcome with a message we can all get behind: Tax the super rich.”
“The super rich are the only minority threatening our way of life. Their goal is to distract and divide us while they rip-off our country. The super-rich must pay their fair share so we can invest in our communities, our public services and our people and protect them from the coming food crisis caused by war and climate breakdown. We need to come together to decide how to tax extreme wealth, with a citizen-led assembly. Sign up to reclaim the flag at: takebackpower.net “

The action comes following last week’s record breaking, climate-fuelled heatwave which saw transport chaos, schools closed and hospitals at breaking point. Lower income workers were particularly exposed to excess heat in kitchens, factories and crinkly sheds, while office workers took shelter in air conditioned offices. This prompted union calls to establish a maximum workplace temperature which were rejected by business and the government – demonstrating once again that the government is in the pay of big corporations and the super rich. [2] [3]
News reports during last week’s heatwave also indicated that the climate crisis is driving food prices higher, worsening the cost of living crisis and inequality, with many more Britons likely to struggle to put food on the table. [4]
Take Back Power is demanding that the UK government establish a permanent House of the People- a citizen’s assembly chosen by democratic lottery, that has the power to tax extreme wealth and fix Britain.
Until the government makes a meaningful statement in response to our demand, we will undertake nonviolent action to resist the super-rich, who are driving us towards social collapse. Donate or sign up to take action at TakeBackPower.net.

Notes to Editors
[1] Take Back Power is a nonviolent civil resistance group in the UK. We aim to put the 99% in charge through citizens’ assemblies. We are ordinary people from all walks of life who believe that in order to fix Britain, we have to tax the rich. And we don’t think the rich should get a veto. We want the people to decide how we tax the rich through a legally-binding citizen’s assembly – A House of the People. It’s time for the 99% to have 99% of a say!
Join us to demand a permanent House of the People with powers to tax the rich and fix Britain.
