England for everyone: Take Back Power supporters raise flags at Wembley

A group of Take Back Power supporters hoisted reimagined England flags at Wembley today carrying the message: England for everyone – a message that says we won’t let the billionaires drive us apart. [1]

Taking action today was Kate, 23, a hospitality worker from London who said:

“I care deeply about my community, and the challenge we face is that the billionaires are getting richer every day while the rest of us struggle to get by. I want to live in a country that doesn’t prioritise giving tax breaks to the extremely wealthy over funding our public services. The super rich are desperately trying to divide us to distract from this inequality, but football has shown we can be united, so now we can stay united to tax the super rich”.

David Currey, 23, a football fan from Manchester said:

“This England team, the majority of which are from migrant backgrounds, have yet again united our country showing England is for everyone. Yet, billionaire backed politicians like Farage do all they can to persuade us that migrants are ruining this country. They do this to distract us from the only minority driving this country into the ground, the super rich. It’s about time that our politicians stood up to the real enemy and taxed the rich!

Also raising flags today was Alice Jones, 20, a student from Manchester who said:

“While I’m not usually a fan of football, seeing how the World Cup has brought communities together has made me feel a connection with the people around me. Our billionaire backed government tries to convince us that it is migrants, people with disabilities, or other marginalised groups that are tearing our country apart, but at Take Back Power we know this isn’t the truth. Once ordinary people come together, we can finally build a country that feels like ours. We need a permanent tax on the rich, to put power back into the hands of the people, so everyone can feel like they are cared for.”

A spokesperson for Take Back Power said:

“Football brings us together. We can’t let fake patriots like Farage and his billionaire sponsors drive us apart. Our rents are high, our wages are low and our services are crumbling. But these crises weren’t caused by migration. They were caused by political choices that handed tax cuts to the wealthiest and stripped communities bare.

“The multi-billionaires that own our media and bankroll the far right aim to distract and divide us while they rip-off our country. If we want a better life for everyone, the super-rich must pay their fair share. Let’s come together to decide how to tax extreme wealth in a citizen-led assembly.”

The action took place this morning as the dust settled on England’s disappointing semi-final loss against Argentina. Selected by a German manager, the 26-man squad featured 20 players who had the option to play for another country. This is because Fifa’s heritage rules allow players to represent the nation of their parents’ or grandparents’ birth. [2]

Despite having net worth in the millions, England’s footballers are not the main target of Take Back Power’s campaign. Instead we’re concerned about the massive amounts of money being funnelled up to the billionaires, to the detriment of the rest of us. Billionaire wealth is spiralling out of control, while poverty rates are soaring.  [3]

Billionaire wealth is a danger to democracy, particularly when billionaires use their wealth to interfere in our politics. Billionaires like Christopher Harborne for example, the Thailand based crypto and defense investor who bankrolls Reform and whose £5m ‘private gift’ to Nigel Farage prompted a parliamentary standards investigation and Farage’s resignation. [4][5]

We are proud of many things about our country – our diverse communities, our democracy, our NHS – which is precisely why we don’t like our flags being misrepresented by organised hate groups. We believe that our flags belong to all of us. That’s why we are reclaiming the flag as a symbol of community and welcome  Sign up to reclaim the flag at: takebackpower.net
