Take Back Power supporters have today been hoisting reimagined national flags in Manchester and Exeter carrying the message: Tax the rich. Take Back Power is a nonviolent civil-resistance group, demanding that the UK government establish a ‘House of the People’- a permanent citizen-led assembly with the power to tax extreme wealth. [1]
As part of Take Back Power’s National Flag Weekend, supporters in Manchester headed to the City Centre, and began hoisting the pink and yellow flags on lamp posts and barriers including at No 10 North (Heron House) and in Albert Square.

In Exeter, a group of supporters have been hoisting pink and yellow Tax the Rich flags around the Exe Bridges roundabout. The reception from passers-by was positive with one commenting “that’s the kind of flag I want to see”, while a cyclist shouted “power to the people”.

The flag actions today follow the news that Gary Lineker has joined 120 British-based millionaires in calling on Andy Burnham to tax their wealth more, telling the new prime minister: “We can afford it” and urging a “devolution of wealth and power from the very richest”. [2]
Taking action in Manchester today was Sam Burgess, 26, a student from Lancaster who said:
“ Everyone deserves to live in a community where they feel safe and welcome. But while the obscenely rich hoard our country’s wealth, ordinary people are suffering. I’m graduating from University this year into a broken society. I can’t see how I can use my degree to do good while living and working in a system that is dedicated to making the super rich richer, and screwing over ordinary people.
“We are outside No10 North flying our revamped version of the Union Jack with a clear message that unites us all, because even the millionaires want you to tax the rich, Andy!.”
Taking action in Exeter today was Ana Heyatawin, 63, a grandmother and humanitarian worker from Somerset who said:
“Our flag has been used and abused by hate groups, so I am honoured to reclaim and proudly fly a message that matters to ordinary people in the UK right now. The only minority destroying our country is the super-rich. Let’s tax the rich, so we can invest in our communities, our public services and our people. They need protection from the coming food crisis caused by war and climate breakdown.
“Unlike the Patriotic Millionaires, most billionaires are not patriotic, and do not believe in equality for all people. We do want equality for future generations and that must include letting the people decide through a permanent House of the People to replace the House of Lords. Take Back Power is demanding that the UK government establish a permanent House of the People- a citizen’s assembly chosen by democratic lottery, that has the power to tax extreme wealth and fix Britain.
Until the government makes a meaningful statement in response to our demand, we will undertake nonviolent action to resist the super-rich, who are driving us towards social collapse. Donate or sign up to take action at TakeBackPower.net.

Notes to Editors
[1] Take Back Power is a nonviolent civil resistance group in the UK. We aim to put the 99% in charge through citizens’ assemblies. We are ordinary people from all walks of life who believe that in order to fix Britain, we have to tax the rich. And we don’t think the rich should get a veto. We want the people to decide how we tax the rich through a legally-binding citizen’s assembly – A House of the People. It’s time for the 99% to have 99% of a say!
Join us to demand a permanent House of the People with powers to tax the rich and fix Britain.
